An earthquake in the republic of Tadzhikistan killed one person, injured six others and destroyed nearly 500 buildings, the official Tass news agency reported Friday.

The quake struck Thursday about 80 miles southwest of the republic's capital of Dushanbe, Tass said. It destroyed farmhouses, cultural and social buildings."The tremor gave birth to avalanches that hid gardens with some 200,000 cubic meters of clay and stone," Tass said.
