Two youths suspected of firing a shotgun at a Utah Highway Patrol trooper and fleeing the state face a Sept. 23 preliminary hearing before 2nd Circuit Judge Roger Bean, court clerks said Monday.

Jared Valentine, 18, and Michael Polete, 17, are charged with attempted murder in connection with the Aug. 8 incident in which UHP trooper John Mitchell's squad car was disabled and Mitchell was injured slightly by flying glass from his windshield. The pair, arrested Aug. 13 near Wells, Nev., were being held in the Davis County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond each. Prosecutors said they plan to prosecute Polete as an adult.

Mitchell was on a routine patrol, the UHP said, when he reported seeing a car run a stop sign. Mitchell attempted to stop the fleeing car when a shotgun was fired from the suspect auto, disabling the police vehicle.
