Former President Lt. Gen. H.M. Ershad was moved to Dhaka central jail from the luxury villa where he has been detained since Dec. 12 on firearms and corruption charges.

Ershad was forced from office Dec. 6 after ruling the country since 1982, when he seized power in a bloodless military coup.M. Shamsur Rahman, a prisons official, said Ershad was shifted to the Dhaka jail at 11 p.m. Thursday on order of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Ershad currently is on trial on two corruption charges and one charge of illegal firearms possession. Several other cases involving corruption, misuse of public funds and abuse of power also have been filed against him.
