Striking teachers called on parents and students to rally with them Friday at the state Capitol to demand that lawmakers provide more money for schools.
About 21,000 public school teachers walked off the job Thursday, halting classes for more than 300,000 youngsters in 36 communities in western Washington. There are about 800,000 public school students statewide.Teachers, legislators and aides to the governor said they saw little hope for a quick solution. Talks between union leaders and the Gov. Booth Gardner collapsed Wednesday.
