Utah Valley Community College will present honorary degrees to Joe Cannon and Veonne Howlett during commencement exercises April 30.

Howlett, who died last year, and Cannon will each receive an honorary doctorate of humanities.Cannon is chairman of the board of directors, president and chief executive officer of Geneva Steel. He was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Utah Business Digest in 1987 and Businessman of the Year by the Utah Manufacturers Association in 1988.

In 1989, Gov. Norm Bangerter appointed Cannon to the UVCC Board of Trustees.

Howlett was named dean of the general education department in 1986. Prior to that, she served as chairwoman of the department for four years. Howlett began teaching at UVCC in 1966 and was co-op coordinator in the office education department from 1976 to 1979.

Howlett died March 8, 1990, at the age of 56 after a lingering illness.

Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, will be the keynote speaker at the college's 50th commencement.
