Late peaches and pears will be available for picking at Capitol Reef National Park at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, according to the park's chief ranger Noel R. Poe.

He said the prices for peaches will be $8.50 per bushel or 17 cents a pound for quantities over 25 pounds and 30 cents a pound for quantities under 25 pounds.Pears will be $7.50 per bushel or 15 cents per pound for over 25 pounds and 25 cents per pound for under 25 pounds.

This year's 250-bushel crop of freestone peaches is of high quality, and two orchards will be opened concurrently to reduce the pressures of harvest overcrowding, Poe said. Ladders will be provided by the National Park Service.

"A new peach orchard has been planted to help maintain the historic scene of the old pioneer community of Fruita. Living history at Capitol Reef is the constant renewal of the orchards planted almost a century ago."
