A Salt Lake County woman was hospitalized Tuesday after she fell 40 feet while climbing in Little Cottonwood Canyon.
Sheriff's officials said the rescue was nothing short of spectacular because of the remote, steep and rocky area where the accident occurred. "It was a very technical rescue," Deputy Thad Moore said.A helicopter had to be used to drop search and rescue climbers into the area. The volunteers were connected to ropes to reach the victim and give her first aid. Using ropes, they then belayed the woman 300 feet down the side of the cliff to the base of a rock, Moore explained.
"She's an awful lucky lady," the deputy said.
It took more than three hours to bring the woman down to the main road, where she was taken to LDS Hospital by helicopter.
Denique Burkenshaw, 20, address unavailable, suffered fractures, sprains and bruises from the fall. She was in serious and stable condition at the hospital.
