Daniel J. Fairbanks, assistant professor of botany at Brigham Young University, has accepted a Fulbright grant to study genetics in Brazil.

The Board of Foreign Scholarships and the United States Information Agency announced that Fairbanks is among the nearly 1,500 U.S. scholars who will travel abroad this academic year under the Fulbright program.Fairbanks received his doctorate from the University of Arizona in 1988 after receiving a master's degree from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor's degree from BYU.

His work for the BYU Benson Institute has taken him to Mexico, Bolivia, Peru and Guatemala. In addition, he is a sculptor - a fourth-generation family member of Fairbanks artists.
