Former Brigham Young University President Jeffrey R. Holland will speak at Brigham Young University's 116th annual commencement exercises Thursday, April 25, and receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters.
He will address the graduates at 4:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center. Conducting the commencement will be President Thomas S. Monson, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Elder Holland became BYU's ninth president in 1980, a position he left in 1989 when he was called to the church's First Quorum of the Seventy.
In addition to his position as BYU president, Elder Holland was a professor of English, professor of ancient scripture and dean of the College of Religion. A former LDS Church commissioner of education, he served as instructor or director of LDS institutes of religion in California, Washington, Connecticut and Salt Lake City.
