About 3,000 dissident students battled police Wednesday, demanding the overthrow of President Roh Tae-woo's government and opposing Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's upcoming visit.

The youths, all members of an anti-government student alliance in Seoul, clashed with riot squads when police tried to block a rally they tried to hold at Hanyang University in eastern Seoul as part of programs marking the April 19, 1960, student uprising. The students burned an American flag and effigies symbolizing Gorbachev and Roh, and fought police for an hour, witnesses said. The protesters hurled firebombs and police countered with tear gas, according to the witnesses.
