A House Judiciary subcommittee will hold a hearing Sept. 15 on a bill to compensate uranium miners and civilian victims of radioactive fallout from U.S. atomic weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, co-sponsored the bill.
The U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year denied fallout victims a hearing on their injuries, ruling the government had the "discretionary power" to conduct the tests without challenge. The victims had won at the federal court level in Salt Lake City, but that decision was later overturned by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver.Rep. Barney Frank, D-N.Y., will be chairman of the session.
