A former South Summit art teacher accused of showing pornographic videos to three students has pleaded guilty to one count of dealing in harmful materials to a minor.

Francis Everett Nichols, 44, entered the plea Monday during a hearing in 3rd District Court. As part of a plea bargain, prosecutors said two other charges of dealing in materials harmful to a minor and one count of attempted sexual abuse will be dropped.

Prosecutors said Nichols showed pornographic videos to three male students in January in Coalville. A complaint alleges he attempted to touch the genitals of the 13-year-old while the videos were being shown. Two of the youths also said Nichols had displayed books showing homosexual and heterosexual intercourse.

Nichols, who taught at South Summit middle and high schools, faces similar charges in Washington County.

Washington County prosecutors allege Nichols tried to sodomize a 14-year-old boy at a St. George motel in February.

Nichols did not comment after Monday's hearing. Sentencing was set for June 3 at 9 a.m. He could be sentenced to up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

He will be arraigned on one charge of forcible sodomy and dealing in materials harmful to a minor on May 13 in St. George.
