Factory and transportation workers in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev walked off the job Tuesday to back demands by striking coal miners' for President Mikhail Gorbachev to resign, heightening concern stoppages could engulf the country, the Soviet media said.

The transportation strike triggered confusion in the Ukrainian capital of 2.5 million people. In addition, striking workers from Kiev's Leninsky Kuznita shipyard marched to rallying points alongside miners streaming in from the Donbass coal region.In the Urals center of Sverdlovsk, meanwhile, metallurgical and white-collar workers decided to stage a two-hour warning strike Thursday across Russia's industrial heartland.

The Sverdlovsk workers back the striking miners in their call for the resignations of Gorbachev and the Cabinet of Soviet Premier Valentin Pavlov, as well as the dissolution of the current Parliament.
