A 14-year-old boy was placed in juvenile detention Monday after another youth was shot and killed.

Seven Union Middle School students were apparently skipping school Monday morning and were all at a home at 8249 S. Romaine (478 East). "There was a little horseplay with a gun," said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Capt. Bill Van Wagenen. The gun discharged and hit 14-year-old Todd Karren, 875 E. Gladiator Way (8600 South), once in the upper-left chest about 9:50 a.m. He was taken to Alta View Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"We're not sure if the horseplay just got out of hand or what," Van Wagenen said. Deputies arrested an unidentified 14-year-old boy and booked him into detention for investigation of manslaughter because of the "serious recklessness" involved, he said.

"We think it would submit itself to a charge of manslaughter," the captain said. The boy was reportedly the only one of the seven youths present that was handling the weapon.

Deputies recovered a .38-caliber revolver believed to have been used in the shooting. Detectives were looking into an unconfirmed report that the 14-year-old suspect had stolen the gun from a vehicle on Saturday night. "We haven't been able to find a (stolen property) report by the owner," he said.

No adults were at the home when the incident occurred.
