American PEN, the U.S. arm of the international writers' organization, honored two fighters for press freedom - Francisco Valencia Soriano of El Salvador and Abraham Serfaty of Morocco - at ceremonies Monday in New York.
The recipients of the PEN 1991 Freedom To Write Awards were announced to the press at a breakfast at the PEN American Center on Broadway prior to a gala fund-raising dinner dance honoring Valencia Soriano and Serfaty's wife, Christine, at the U.S. Custom House on Bowling Green.Valencia Soriano is the director of El Salvador's only independent newspaper, Diario Latino, and was honored for his struggle to remain independent in the face of a repressive political situation.
Serfaty, former editor of the critical Moroccan literary magazine, Souffles, has been imprisoned for life for his activities. His wife accepted the award for him.
