George S. Malouf, Sr., age 82, died peacefully in his sleep on April 7, 1991 at his home in Salt Lake City.
He was born in Sao Palo, Brazil, S.A. September 9, 1908 to Samaan and Hristeen Malouf. His parents moved to Kafaracab, Lebanon in 1913. In November of 1928 he emigrated to the United States. He married Edna Sawaya, January 15, 1939; she preceded him in death on August 27, 1970. They had two children, Kristeen Malouf Allem and George Malouf, Jr. Married Gladys Mike, July 3, 1971. He operated a produce business in Utah and Wyoming for 10 years after coming to America. He purchased and operated Ace Billiards in Salt Lake City from 1938 until 1948 when he founded Duce Billiards in South Salt Lake. He sensed the emerging boom in outdoor recreation and soon replaced the billiards and lunch room with a full line sporting goods store, which became known as Duce Sporting Goods & Marine. He was first to open such a business outside the downtown area. He became known as "Mr. Duce" by his loyal customers and friends. As president he propelled the business to successful heights until his retirement in 1983. He loved fishing and hunting and delighted in outings with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and sharing his home grown fruits and vegetables with family and friends.In additions to his wife and children he is survived by a son-in-law, Leon J. Allem; grandchildren, Lee Allem; Tom and wife, Lori Allem; and David Allem, all of Salt Lake City; John Allem and Joe Allem, both Fremont, California; Mark and wife, Shirley Malouf; Marylynn and husband, Richard Ulibarri, and Michelle Malouf, all of Salt Lake City; Mike Malouf, U.S. Army, Fort Lewis, Washington; Matt Malouf, South Bend, Indiana; one great-grandson, Michael Thomas Allem. Other survivors in Lebanon include: a brother, Kaleem and wife, Victoria Malouf; a sister, Amalia Malouf Rayes; and a brother-in-law, Timothy Malouf; and six nieces, also one nephew in Saudia Arabia; a niece in Canada and a niece in Australia.
Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, April 10, 1991, 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 670 So. 1100 East. Vigil service with rosary will be held, Tuesday 7 p.m. at the church; where friends may call Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. Committal service Mount Calvary Cemetery, 4th Avenue and T Street.
