A bomb exploded Friday in a town outside Belfast, seriously wounding one man a day after an IRA member died from a confrontation with security forces.

The bomb had been placed in or near a car parked in Portadown, 25 miles southwest of Belfast, a Royal Ulster Constabulary spokesman said, speaking anonymously.No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Thursday, a man died from wounds received Wednesday during a confrontation with security forces. Authorities said a primed mortar bomb was found close to where he was shot in the driveway of a house in Downpatrick, 20 miles south of Belfast.
