Defense officials have requested $29.3 billion in the fiscal 1989 national budget to strengthen Japan's defense capacity and cope with growing Soviet military buildups in the Far East, officials said Wednesday.

The Defense Agency request was part of a total of $478.4 billion solicited by government ministries and agencies Wednesday. The Finance Ministry plans to slash the sum to around $432.8 billion before it formulates the 1989 budget, starting April 1.

In accordance with Japan's pledge to the United States to conduct a substantial and steady defense buildup, the defense budget has been given preference over allocations to other ministries. Part of the budgetary request calls for $389.7 million as Tokyo's share of U.S. defense costs in Japan.
