Monticello is hoping a new, deep well will help avoid a water-supply emergency this summer.

After years of frustration, a new test well apparently has located an adequate water supply in a rock stratum about 400 feet deep, said Mayor Jack Young. The water is needed immediately because winter storms did not sufficiently replenish Monticello's reservoirs.

Even if the new well meets expectations, Mayor Young said conservation measures likely will be imposed for a third straight year. Outdoor watering was restricted last summer to one day per week for four hours.
