Lanny Wadkins took advantage of ideal morning conditions and soft greens to fire a 5-under-par 67 today and seize the early first-round lead in the Masters.

Jodie Mudd, Wadkins' playing partner, eagled the 500-yard 15th hole, a par 5, but bogeyed the 18th to shoot 70.Ken Green, who has a well-chronicled irreverance for Augusta National Golf Club, collapsed on "Amen Corner" after a birdie on 10. He had a bogey on 11 and a triple bogey 6 on the devilish 155-yard No. 12.

On that par 3 12th, Green hit his tee shot in the water, bunkered his third, came out in four and two-putted. Undaunted, Green came back with birdies on the 13th and 14th and was 3-under through 14.

Green, wearing a green glove, green socks and green-striped saddle oxfords, sank an 8-foot birdie putt on the 435-yard ninth hole to tour 3,465-yard front nine in 32, two shots off the course record.

He then birdied the downhill 485-yard par 4 No. 10 before disaster struck.

Green, who criticized the Masters as "disorganized" last year, was in the sixth group off the tee.

It is his fourth Masters and Green's best finish was a tie for 11th in 1989.

Wadkins, the recent Hawaiian Open champion, shot a 2-under par 34 on the front nine.

He bogeyed 11 but charged back with birdies on 12, 14 and 15, and 17 and a back nine of 33.

Wadkins, the 1977 PGA champion who has earned $335,000 this year, one-putted five of the first seven holes.

He reached the front bunker in two on the 555-yard Par 5 No. 2 and hit a sand wedge within 2 feet for a birdie.

Wadkins made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 360-yard par 4 No. 3 and saved par on the 205-yard par 3 No. 4 with a bunker shot within 2 feet.

A 25-foot, downhill birdie putt on the 435-yard par 4 No. 5 sent Wadkins to 3-under. He bogeyed the 535-yard par 5 eighth hole and parred the 435-yard No. 9.

The 42-year-old Wadkins, who has 19 tour victories, was in the second group off the tee playing with Mudd, whose best finish in the Masters was a tie for fourth in 1987.

Wadkins has played in 18 Masters, but has only three top 10 finishes.

Mudd was 1-under on the front, fell back to even on 13, but birdied the 405-yard par 4 No. 14 before his eagle.
