Jimmy Connors struggled 2 1/2 hours to join John McEnroe and Stefan Edberg in the third round of the Japan Open.

The 38-year-old Connors, playing in his third tournament since wrist surgery last October, beat 16th-seeded Wally Masur 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.McEnroe defeated Slobodan Zivojinovic 6-1, 6-4. Edberg, the defending champion and top seed, beat Kelly Evernden 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).

In women's second-round matches, top-seeded Amy Frazier beat Karin Kschwendt 6-4, 6-3 and second-seeded Sabine Appelmans beat Mana Endo 6-3, 6-1.
