Hawkins, 43, has been stationed in Germany as a field medic with the Army National Guard's 328th General Hospital unit as part of the Desert Storm deployment. Hawkins, who would have been eligible to retire after 21 years service in the guard on Jan. 6, left his wife, Elaine, and four children at home. As he departed, Davis District Superintendent Rich Kendell said the district would miss Hawkins and would hold his position open for him. Hawkins was vice principal and principal at South Davis Junior High and had also been a teacher and football coach at Woods Cross. Vice Principal Mike Jarman has been filling in for Hawkins in his absence.
