Fire possibly sparked by a welding spark caused an estimated $45,000 to $50,000 damage to buildings at Riverton Meat Co., 13200 S. 1389 West, late Wednesday.

Hidden spaces where buildings in the meat processing plant have been remodeled concealed the fire, forcing firefighters to wait until the blaze broke through the roof, said county fire Lt. Dennis Steadman. Even then, firefighters used aerial fire cannons instead of climbing on the snow-covered roof because the snow and freezing water made it slippery.More than 30 firefighters from Riverton, Draper, South Jordan and the county responded to the blaze, which was reported at 9:13 p.m. The damage was in an area of the business used to cut and wrap meat, Steadman said.
