A soaring hawk carrying a fish smacked into a high-voltage power line Wednesday in a crash that killed the bird and knocked out electricity to virtually all of Sturgeon Bay for 45 minutes.
Officials said an osprey hit the power line on the east side of the city of some 9,000 people at 4:12 p.m., leaving everything in the dark except the city's industrial park.Utility officials figured out the problem within minutes, but bringing everything back on line took until 4:57 p.m.
One woman who was stuck between floors in an elevator was rescued by ladder. No injuries or other problems were reported.
Department of Natural Resources Warden Joel McOlash recovered what was left of the dead osprey, which had a broken wing - evidence that the bird likely hit the power line in flight.
