Israel said Thursday it finished the secret evacuation of the entire Jewish community of Albania with the arrival of 11 immigrants at Ben Gurion International Airport.
"There are no more Jews in Albania. As far as we know, the last Albanian Jew is coming today," said Iris Ben-Shahal, a spokeswoman for the quasi-governmental Jewish Agency.Thirty of the 341 immigrants, a fragment of the once-vibrant Albanian Jewish community, chose to settle in the United States, she said. The rest stayed in Israel.
Ben-Shahal said the Albanian evacuation began in December, shortly after the fall of the Stalinist government there. She said no more airlifts are planned because the organizers do not think there are any Jews left in Albania.
