Hiring and promotion criteria can get in the way of women seeking management positions at state agencies, say representatives of the Salt Lake chapter of the Association for Women Geoscientists.

Obstacles to career advancement will be the focus of a panel discussion, sponsored by the association, on Wednesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in the alumni lounge of the Olpin Union Building, University of Utah.Panelists will include state Rep. Joanne Milner, D-Salt Lake, who sponsored a bill approved by the 1991 Legislature mandating the preparation and implementaion of a state employee affirmative action plan before Jan. 1, 1992.

Other panelists will include Genevieve Atwood, former director of the Utah Geologic Survey; M. Lee Allison, director of the Utah Geologic Survey; Joanne McHugh, personnel director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources; Dianne Nielson, director of the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining; and Jan Tyler, management consultant for the Utah Department of Human Resources.
