Lee A. Butler, a Provo native and Brigham Young University graduate, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to conduct historical research in Japan.

Butler is now a doctoral candidate at Princeton University. He graduated from Provo High School in 1976 and from BYU with a bachelor's degree in history in 1983. He spent 18 months at Tokyo University as a Japanese Ministry of Education (Monbusho) Fellow and began graduate studies at Princeton in 1985.The Fullbright grant was announced by the Board of Foreign Scholarships and the U.S. Information Agency.

Butler's research in Japan will center on politics and culture in Kyoto during the early 17th century. He is one of approximately 1,000 U.S. grantees being sent abroad for the 1988-89 academic year under the Fulbright exchange program.
