Harris County commissioners who apparently are not fans of jailhouse rock are balking at a request to purchase four new jail pianos at a cost of $4,500 each.

The pianos, which would be used primarily for religious services, were included in a $1.9 million budget proposal for the new county jail. Budget Officer Dick Raycraft was ordered to review the list and submit recommendations to the county commissioners court."Why can't we get used pianos?" asked Commissioner Jim Fonteno this week. "I think we could get good used pianos at a lower price."

Commissioner Steve Radack also questioned a proposal to purchase eight pingpong tables for $650 each.

Sheriff's department spokeswoman Marcie Nolan said the pianos should not have been included in the budget request. The instruments were part of a "wish list" complied last year.
