An education specialist with the Davis County Health Department has been commended for his work in the past year in discouraging tobacco sales to minors and use of tobacco among minors in the county.

Todd Thompson was awarded a plaque Tuesday by Chris Chalkley, representing the Utah Department of Health's bureau of health promotion.Thompson was cited for his work in educating students on the hazards of tobacco use and his initiation of a sting operation to catch retailers violating a state law banning the sale of tobacco to minors.

In addition to working through the schools, Thompson distributed 64 information packets to stores that sell tobacco products, detailing the state law regarding minors. The packets contained other educational material and warning stickers.
