Missie Dick tries out the new wheelchair donated by Silver Mesa School in Sandy surrounded by members of the Silver Mesa sixth-grade student council: Jamie Hepworth, left, Aaron Lambert, Travis Ganchay, Cody Sandall, Erin Simkins and Nicole Nelford. When the council visited nearby Jordan Valley School, they noticed that the students at Jordan Valley, a special needs school, could use a standing wheelchair. So when Silver Mesa raised $850 in a weeklong read-a-thon last fall, the student council decided to spend it on the new wheelchair. The gift was a new project for the read-a-thon money, said Silver Mesa Principal Bruce Barnson. Barnson, who worked at Jordan Valley in the 1970s, said the standing chairs are especially useful for students with severe cerebral palsy. The Silver Mesa sixth-graders liked the project so much, Barnson said, "my guess is they'll probably want to do this again next year."
