George Bell was a late scratch from the Chicago Cubs lineup for Saturday's exhibition finale against the Milwaukee Brewers because of inflammation in his left knee.

Bell, who hit .355 this spring and led the Cubs with 17 RBI, was expected to start in left field Saturday.A team official said Bell's knee would be drained and he would be ready for Opening Day Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

One of three free agents signed this winter by the Cubs, Bell was bothered last season by vision problems, appearing in one game from Aug. 25 to Sept. 8.
