The University of Utah came back in the second game of Friday's doubleheader at Derks Field to defeat the Wyoming Cowboys, 8-6, in Western Athletic Conference baseball play. Wyoming won the first game, 10-6.
The Cowboys also won the first game of the series on Thursday. The four-game series concludes today at 1 p.m. at Derks Field.After falling behind 3-0, in the second game, Utah came back to tie the game in the second inning on two walks and three successive singles by shortstop Robert Castellano, catcher Scott Peterson and right fielder Mike Aranzullo. The Utes then added three runs in the third on singles by second baseman Shaun Peters and left fielder Brett Alvey, a two-run double from senior co-captain Steve Davis and a base hit by designated hitter Matt Mosiello which scored Davis.
Relief pitcher Bret Cornell gained the win, allowing only three runs on four hits in three and one third innings pitched.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Wyoming opened up a an 8-3 lead in the second inning as they scored seven runs in the second. Four of the seven runs came on a grand-slam home run by Wyoming left fielder Brett Feauto.
Utah's overall record now stands at 14-22 and the Utes are 3-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. Wyoming has posted a record of 15-10 and stand at 4-2 in the WAC.
