Cam Neely's third goal with 3:22 left, five minutes after he had tied the game, gave the Boston Bruins a 4-3 victory Friday night and a split of their first two playoff games with the Hartford Whalers.
Neely took a pass across the slot from Craig Janney and fired a 15-footer from the right side by goalie Peter Sidorkiewicz.Bob Carpenter, playing his first game since breaking his left kneecap on Dec. 8, began the play by poking the puck out of Boston's zone to Janney at center ice. Janney carried up the left side and his pass escaped the lunge of Brad Shaw, the only Hartford defender.
Neely, tied for second in NHL in the regular season with 51 goals, got his second career playoff hat trick.
Games 3 and 4 of the best-of-7 Adams Division semifinal are scheduled Sunday and Tuesday nights in Hartford.
Canadiens 5, Sabres 4
At Montreal, Guy Carbonneau scored with 1:21 remaining to give the Montreal Canadiens a 5-4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres and forge a 2-0 lead in their Adams Division semifinal series.
Carbonneau broke a 4-4 tie when he grabbed a pass from Mike McPhee at the side of the Buffalo net and put a backhand drive into the short corner of the Sabres net at 18:39 of the third period.
Montreal's Stephane Richer had tied the game 4-4 at 9:51 of the third period when he fired a 50-foot slap shot into the Buffalo net. Richer collected a loose puck at his own blue line to begin the play.
Game 3 of the best-of-seven series will be played Sunday night in Buffalo.
