Wyoming pitcher Rigo Beltran spoiled the University of Utah's WAC home opener Thursday at Derks Field.
Beltran, a senior lefthander, held the Utes to four hits while striking out seven as the Cowboys pounded Utah, 9-1. Beltran even scored twice himself, giving Wyoming all the runs it needed to win.The game looked to be a pitchers' duel early, as Beltran and Utah righthander David Littlewood - making his first start of the season after pitching effectively in seven relief appearances - breezed through the first couple of innings.
But the Cowboys picked up a run in the top of the third, and Utah responded with its only run of the game in the bottom of the inning when designated hitter Mike Aranzullo doubled home Robert Castellano.
In the top of the fourth, three hits, two walks and a throwing error by Ute catcher Scott Peterson led to four Wyoming runs. With that cushion for confidence, Beltran pitched five innings of no-hit ball while the Cowboy lead ballooned to eight.
Beltran's record improved to 5-0. Littlewood dropped to 1-4.
The loss drops Utah to 13-21 overall, 2-3 in Western Athletic Conference play. Wyoming is 14-9, 3-1.
The Utes and Cowboys play again Friday in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m., then conclude their four-game series with a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. All games will be played at Derks Field.
