An Islamic coin collection belonging to Texas tycoon Nelson Bunker Hunt was sold for $293,700 at Sotheby's, the auctioneers said.
The buyer in Thursday's purchase was not disclosed. Hunt said before the sale he hoped the coins would go to a collector committed to the advance of Islamic culture. The 8,526 coins in gold, silver and copper spanned 13 centuries of Islamic coinage from Spain to India.
The auction brought the total for the Hunt coin sales, all previously in New York, to nearly $29.7 million. The final sales will be in New York on June 19-21.
Hunt and his brother, William Herbert Hunt, inherited an oil fortune. They were forced to sell many of their possessions after failing to corner the world silver market in 1980.
