Salt Lake City's Urban Forestry Division has announced a new program to train volunteers about proper tree planting, protection and maintenance techniques to preserve city trees.

A two-part Citizen Forestry training class is scheduled Thursday, April 4, 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, April 6, 9 a.m. until noon, in the Salt Lake County Government Complex Center, 2001 S. State.City urban forester Bill Rutherford will offer information about tree planting, early care of newly planted trees, pruning and maintenance. Volunteers can also assist with a number of functions within the Citizen Forestry Program, such as operate telephones, organize other volunteers and coordinate special tree-planting events.
