State Auditor Tom Allen was one of two recipients of a national award for financial management presented on behalf of the Joint Financial Management Improvement Program by Deputy Secretary of the Treasury John Robson.

Allen and Robert L. Yates, treasurer of the Tennessee Valley Authority, were given the Donald L. Scantlebury Memorial Awards for distinguished leadership at the program's 20th annual conference in Washington, D.C., on Monday.Utah's auditor was cited for improving accounting and auditing at both the state and local levels through supporting changes in the law, including requiring more public reporting of local government audits.

Allen was also praised for working closely with the state finance department to earn the Government Finance Officers Association's certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting every year since 1985.

He has also been active in national accounting organizations, serving on the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants committee to improve auditing of state and local governments.
