The American Comedy Awards (9 p.m., Ch. 4) are certainly one of the stranger such presentations on television.
Not because of the content, or the format, or the awards themselves. But because the event was taped weeks ago and is only now making it on the air. (This is the only instance in which TV critics have actually received videotapes of an awards show before the broadcast.)I won't spoil it by telling you who the winners are (although you may have seen them reported on "Entertainment Tonight" several weeks ago). Although, really, the awards themselves aren't the reason to watch. The comedians, winners or not, are the attractions here.
The "Comedy Awards" aren't the only extravaganza on the tube tonight, however. There's also CBS' All-Star Salute to the Troops (7 p.m., Ch. 5). This two-hour show, originating live from a hangar at Andrews Air Force Base, will feature Alan Alda, Louie Anderson, Glenn Ford, Charlton Heston, Jennifer Holliday, Howie Mandell, Barbara Mandrell, Gary Morris, Tony Orlando, K.T. Oslin, Ray Stevens, Randy Travis and BeBe and CeCe Winans.
Elsewhere, Kevin and Wayne are fighting again on The Wonder Years (7 p.m., Ch. 4), this time over their sister's vacated bedroom; Dennis Miller ("Saturday Night Live") hosts the Sports Emmy Awards (7 p.m., ESPN); the cast is reunited in The Return of the Musketeers (7 p.m., USA); Doogie Howser, M.D. (7:30 p.m., Ch. 4) moves up a half-hour this week and gets some advice from Albert Einstein; Sam ends up running a bordello on Quantum Leap (9 p.m., Ch. 2) and Jake and the Fateman (9 p.m., Ch. 5) moves back an hour for this week only.
- LOOKING TOWARD THURSDAY: Cliff plays cricket on The Cosby Show (7 p.m., Ch. 2); Lilith mourns her lab rat on Cheers (8 p.m., Ch. 2); Cooper falls in love on Twin Peaks (8 p.m., Ch. 4); The Antagonists (8 p.m., Ch. 5) battle over a man accused of killing his sister; Seinfeld (8:30 p.m., Ch. 2) moves to Thursdays; warfare continues at the firm on L.A. Law (9 p.m., Ch. 2); and open warfare breaks out between Paige and Linda on Knots Landing (9 p.m., Ch. 5). - SDP
