The University of Utah baseball team improved its record to 12-20 by winning its first two home games of the season against Southern Utah.
Led by the pitching of senior righthander Bill Moeller, the Utes held Southern Utah to only three hits on the way to a 15-3 victory in the first game of the doubleheader. Utah won the second game, 9-1. Redshirt first baseman Shane Jones had three hits and knocked in five runs for Utah. Senior right fielder Mike Aranzullo went 4-for-4 including a double and one RBI to also key the Utes win. Second baseman Shaun Peters also contributed three hits and two RBIs. The game saw sophomore third baseman Mike Edwards hit his 12th home run of the season. Edwards entered the game leading the Western Athletic Conference in home runs with 11 and in hitting with a .435 average. Edwards went 2-for-4, adding a single to his home run.In the second game of the doubleheader, Utah continued to hold the Thunderbirds' offense in check as the Utes allowed only four hits and one run behind pitchers Guy Fowlks and Dan Hansgen. Meanwhile, the Ute offense continued to generate runs as Utah scored nine runs on 12 hits.
Aranzullo continued to serve as the catalyst from his leadoff position as he went 3-for-3 with an intentional walk. In the two games, Aranzullo was 7-for-7 with two walks and three runs scored. Edwards duplicated his first game performance, stroking his 13th home run of the year in the first inning and adding a single in the fourth.
The Utes and Thunderbirds play the final game of the three-game series Wednesday at Derks Field beginning at 2:30 p.m.
On Thursday Utah hosts conference rival Wyoming at 2 p.m for a single game. Utah and Wyoming will also play a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. and will conclude the series Saturday in a 1 p.m. game. All games will be played at Derks Field at 13th South and West Temple.
