Coup leaders have appointed a former civilian Cabinet minister, Soumano Sacko, as interim prime minister until elections are held, official radio says.

The appointment of Sacko, 40, announced Tuesday, comes one week after a coup that toppled Mali's 22-year-old military government of Gen. Moussa Traore. Last weekend, the new military government led by led by Lt. Col. Amadou Toumai Toure promised to share power with civilians and that elections would be held by year's end.The Transitional Committee for the Salvation of the People, the military-civilian government the coup leaders promised to form, announced Sacko's appointment, the radio said.
