T.J. Maxx, a national chain selling designer apparel for men, women and children, will become the second anchor in the Park Centre retail development, 7000 S. 1300 East, later this year.
Construction will begin soon on a 25,000 square-foot store built to specifications of the Framingham, Mass.-based retailer, which operates 370 stores in 44 states. The store is scheduled for opening in late August or early September.Founded in 1977, T.J. Maxx specializes in off-price retailing, a concept of carrying quality brand name and designer apparel that was manufactured to sell at higher prices but sells for less because of the chain's large buying volume, company officials said.
T.J. Maxx also carries famous make giftware, domestics and fashion footwear for women and men.
The chain chooses new locations on the basis of population density, requiring 75,000 or more people within a five-miles radius and demographic factors including mid-to-upper level incomes, families with children, 60 percent or higher ratio of home ownership and close proximity to conventional department and specialty stores.
It will be T.J. Maxx's first venture in Utah and plans call for other outlets if the Park Centre location is successful.
Opening of the T.J. Maxx store is considered by centre officials as a major coup in an effort to obtain a second anchor to go along with Albertsons. Plans call for expanding to the south with 120,000 square-feet of space to the 18-month-old project.
Stuart Thain of Consolidated Realty Group represented T.J. Maxx and landlord Fourels Investment Co. in the lease transaction.
