Lawyers for the government and Imelda Marcos will attempt to reach a new settlement of a civil racketeering case against the former Philippine first lady in California, an official said Monday.

The government of President Corazon Aquino is seeking $5 billion in damages in the racketeering suit. The government says Marcos and her late husband, former President Ferdinand Marcos, stole upward of $10 billion in public funds during his 20-year rule.
