State licensing authorities have taken disciplinary action against a Logan oral surgeon undergoing treatment for drug addiction, an order said.

Specifically, Dr. Stuart D. Wilkinson's license to prescribe and administer schedule two controlled substances has been suspended for one year, the order said. Placed on five years' probation are Wilkinson's license to practice and his authority to prescribe and administer schedule three-five drugs. The action recommended by the state dental licensing board and approved by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing allows Wilkinson to maintain his practice.

Recognizing his drug problem last summer, the order said, Wilkinson instructed his staff not to allow him access to the office drug stock. But a month later, the order said, he inadvertently found the key and for five months periodically self-administered the anesthetic, Fentanyl.

The order said that on Jan. 9 Wilkinson went into respiratory arrest requiring treatment by paramedics after a self-injected dose of Fentanyl.

Following the overdose, Wilkinson reported his drug-addiction problem to officials at Logan Regional Medical Center, which then revoked his hospital privileges, the order said. Those privileges were reinstated Feb. 22.

A petition filed with the division said Wilkinson told an investigator with the division that his drug addiction developed last year from personal problems.

Wilkinson's attorney, Harold L. Reiser, said he was pleased with the order in that it served the interests of the public and his client.
