Kern River Gas Transmission Co. has been ordered to stop excavation on the Utah portion of a planned Wyoming to California natural gas pipeline.

The cease order will be in effect until the company secures new excavation permits from the Utah Division of History.State archaeologist David Madsen said he has not been contacted by the company since the cease order was issued by the Utah attorney general's office. The notice gives Kern River 30 days to comply with state antiquities laws or face termination of its construction easement.

Madsen said the company must show evidence of written permission to cross state lands from the Utah Division of Lands and Forestry and that a mitigation plan has been approved involving three archaeological sites in Iron County damaged by company excavation.

Madsen said the company will also have to provide a general mitigation plan for addressing any future incidents.
