About 300 people gathered in front of the Cathedral of the Madeleine Friday night to participate in the fifth annual "Good Friday Procession of the Cross." Alton Faletoi, a member of the First United Methodist Church, was the first to carry the cross. The procession started at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 331 E. South Temple, and stopped at Cathedral Church of St. Mark, 231 E. 100 South, First United Methodist Church, 203 S. 200 East, Central Christian Church, 370 S. 300 East, and ended at First Presbyterian Church, 12 C St. Each location represented a station of the cross. At each station there was a scripture reading from either the 26th or 27th chapter of Matthew in the New Testament, followed by a hymn and a prayer. Processional hymns were sung as the group moved from church to church, along with readings from the Psalms. Donald Baird, senior pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, said people join the processional along the route, carrying banners or candles.
