Dixie Mitchell, Ms. Wheelchair Utah, was named first runnerup in the Ms. Wheelchair America Pageant Saturday night.

Crowned Ms. Wheelchair America was Jewell Massey, of Macon, Ga. Second runnerup was Bethany Ladd, of Florida.Mitchell, the mother of two, lives in Salt Lake City and owns her own medical transcription business. Her husband, Tom, accompanied her to Mobile for the four-day activities leading up to the Saturday night pageant.

Mitchell, who has been in a wheelchair since contracting polio as an infant, also serves on the Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped.

The pageant, which had 12 participating states this year, is a celebration of the achievements of the handicapped to promote awareness of those accomplishments, said officials of Ms. Wheelchair America Inc., sponsor of the pageant.

The officials said contestants are selected for their conversational ability, for their ability to represent the accomplishments and contributions made by people with disabilities and for their ability to serve as an advocate for handicapped people's unmet needs.
