IRA guerrillas staged a blitz of bomb and gun attacks across the province and their supporters rioted for two days to protest the extradition of a convicted IRA member from the Irish Republic.

At least 31 people on both sides of the border were injured in the weekend of violence, including riots in the republic and 17 bombings in the north, but Britain - faced by an intensified Irish Republican Army campaign that has killed nine British servicemen in as many days - vowed to request seven more extraditions.Police in Northern Ireland braced for more attacks by the outlawed IRA, which is fighting to end British rule in mostly Protestant Northern Ireland so it can be united with the Catholic Republic and a socialist state established in its place.
