The Soviet Union has begun destroying its SS-20 missiles in line with the U.S.-Soviet pact to eliminate the superpowers' intermediate-range nuclear forces, according to Tass.

It said three of the multiple-warhead SS-20s were blown up Sunday as part of the compliance with steps outlined in the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty. Under the accord, the two superpowers are to get rid of all of their nuclear weapons that have ranges of between 300 and 3,400 miles.Tass said Sunday's demolition occurred at the same location where the SS-20s were tested - at the Kapustin Yar site 600 miles southeast of Moscow.
