Herman Vandecasteele won in straight sets to lead the BYU men's tennis team to a Western Athletic Conference season-opening win over Air Force 5-3.
The Cougars returned from a rainy trip to California with a head start on the league thanks to strong singles play. BYU won four of the six singles matches and split the two doubles matches.BYU rested for a short while and then hit the courts again to make up a rained out match with Cal-Berkeley. The Cougars were swept 6-0 by the overpowering and nationally ranked Bears.
Earlier in the trip the Cougars lost to San Jose State. They are 5-10 on the season.
