The Utah State Historical Society will test telemarketing as a way of boosting membership.

The Utah Board of State History approved a two-week test that is expected to reach about 8,000 people living in the Salt Lake area. The test will cost about $700.The solicitation will involve a 30-second tape recorded message with those interested given time to leave their name and telephone number for a live contact at a later date. Studies indicate about 5 percent of those contacted will request additional contact. That would be about 400 people. If half those actually paid the $15 membership fee, the society would raise $3,000.

The $15 membership fee includes four annual editions of the Utah State Historical Society Quarterly magazine and the monthly newsletter. Members also are offered discount rates for participating in a number of society-sponsored history tours during the year.

The telemarketing effort will be conducted between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
